Who doesn't remember their local toy store when they were a kid? Mine was Karp's (or maybe it was Carp's....the 8 year old version of me apparently wasn't big on spelling) on Carleton Avenue in Islip Terrace, NY. I could walk to it within minutes and it had a great toy and candy selection; a kid's dream come true. I probably only made one actual toy purchase at this 5 and dime but walked those toy aisles reverently with hope and awe once a week.
There is now a day dedicated to the independent toy store thanks to The American Specialty Toy Retailing Association or ASTRA, a group that promotes the Karp's of the world. Neighborhood Toy Store Day is this Saturday and allows an early start to the holiday season with games, give aways and a chance to meet the passionate folks who own your local toy store. So, carve out some time from the usual Saturday chores and go be a kid again!
We are fortunate to have Chomp Stix occupy the shelves of some fantastic toy stores; if you live near one of these great stores, stop in and say hi:
