Key West Art + Historical Society - The Customs House

File this one under the "we keep good company" category; to know that our products are being sold in a museum gift shop of the Florida Key's oldest cultural non-profit organization is very humbling.  Since being founded in 1949 the Key West Art + Historical Society has rescued, renovated and now operates three unique and separate museums on the island: East Martello Fort - a Union built Civil War fort that now functions as a museum of local history including Robert the Haunted Doll (you know you want to know the back story to this one), The Lighthouse - built in 1847 and used for navigational purposes until 1969 where visitors can climb the tower for an entire island view and The Custom House - built in 1891 as THE federal building for Key West this structure was taken over by the Navy in the 1930s and ultimately abandoned in the 1970s; renovated by KWAHS it now operates as the Museum of Art + History. If you are lucky enough to live near or be visiting Key West, pay a visit to the great folks and stewards of Key West's history at any of these museums.
